Press Conference held in Tbilisi Regarding Constitutional Case Challenging Money Laundering Legislation as Being Contrary to the Presumption of Innocence

Justice Abroad Direction Michael Polak spoke at a Press Conference on 21 December 2023 with esteemed Georgian attorney Kakha Kozhoridze about the constitutional motion they have submitted in Georgis which challenges money laundering provisions requiring a defendant to prove the source of unexplained funds to avoid a criminal conviction. The constitutional submission argues that the provisions are contrary to the presumption of innocence found in the Georgian Constitution, Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights, and the EU Directive.

Michael Polak is instructed along with a team of Georgian lawyers to represent a Turkish businessman whose funds have been seized and who has been accused of money laundering despite the fact that the prosecution has set out any criminal offences from which they say the funds come from.
