David Hunter Murder Case in Cyprus Adjourned for Prosecution to Serve Evidence. The trial is to Take Place on 16 June 2022.

Justice Abroad is assisting 74-year-old British pensioner David Hunter who is facing a murder charge in the Paphos Assize Court after the death of his terminally ill wife in December 2021. Justice Abroad is working with Cypriot lawyer Nicoletta Charalambidou, an experienced human rights advocate, and Ritsa Pekri, a criminal law expert on Mr Hunter’s case.

Mr Hunter’s trial for murder, where he faces life imprisonment if convicted, was supposed to start today on 18 April 2022. However, evidence seized from the property and medical evidence to be relied upon by the prosecution was not ready in time for today’s hearing. Therefore, the trial was adjourned until 16 June 2022.

Justice Abroad and our Cypriot lawyers had previously sent lengthy written submissions to the Attorney General of Cyprus requesting that the charge be changed from murder to assisting suicide which carries a 10-year maximum sentence rather than the mandatory life sentence for murder. Under the Cypriot Constitution, the Attorney General is empowered to act 'in the public interest, to institute, conduct, take over and continue or discontinue any proceedings for an offence against any person...' This request has been rejected.

Justice Abroad's Michael Polak has stated:

It is hard to see how the prosecution of David Hunter for murder is in the public interest, given his age and the circumstances of this case. Although David is disappointed that our submissions for the charge to be changed to assisting suicide fell on deaf ears, he is steadfast and determined to defend the charge of murder. He is buoyed by the messages of support from those in Cyprus, the United Kingdom, and across the world and we will be doing everything we can to get David home.

The family is raising funds to assist with the legal costs of bringing David home.
