The Mirror Features the David Hunter Case,

British Pensioner on Trial for Murder in Cyprus after Death of his Terminally Ill Wife

Justice Abroad is assisting 74-year-old British pensioner David Hunter who is facing a murder charge in the Paphos Assize Court after the death of his wife in December 2021. Justice Abroad is working with Cypriot lawyer Nicoletta Charalambidou, an experienced human rights advocate, and Ritsa Pekri, a criminal law expert on Mr Hunter’s case.

David’s daughter, Lesley, spoke to the Mirror recently and shared snippets of the conversation she has had with her father whilst he has been in prison. David told Lesley that he does not know how to live without his wife, and he does not know who he is without her. He has also shared that he ‘speaks’ to his late wife every night in his cell, which he shares with nine other men.

While speaking to the Mirror Lesley said, “The only thing he really cared about was giving his family a nice life. Now it’s ended like this there’s a real possibility he will die alone in a foreign prison.” David’s family in law all support him and want him to return home.

Lesley also told the Mirror, “Mum begged him for a long time (to assist her death) and was very clear about what she wanted. She was very much of the opinion that we have autonomy over our bodies.”

Justice Abroad has written to the Attorney General of Cyprus in relation to the charge being dropped or reduced to an assisted suicide charge, which carries a 10-year maximum sentence rather than the mandatory life sentence for murder.
